1973!
What a year! American Graffiti was at the movie theatres. All in the Family was on TV. And Top 40 radio stations across the country were facing new competition that had established itself on FM, Album Oriented Rock. And just look at some of the LPs that came out that year!
Each of The Beatles made their mark with successful solo records. John Lennon with Mind Games, George Harrison with Living in the Material World, and Ringo Starr with Ringo, and Paul McCartney with TWO LPs: Red Rose Speedway and Band on the Run.
Elton John was cruising toward superstardom in 1973 with two successful albums himself, Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only the Piano Player and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
Pink Floyd released one of the best-selling albums of all time, Dark Side of the Moon. =
The Who put out Quadrophenia.
The Eagles put out Desperado.
For Led Zeppelin, 1973 was the year of Houses of the Holy.
And The Rolling Stones checked in with Goats Head Soup.
Then Alice Cooper released their chart-topping record, Billion Dollar Babies,
While The Doobie Brothers were still building their reputation as a biker band with the album The Captain and Me.
For our next tribute, Great Moments in Vinyl will revel in some of the best songs from some of the best records of 1973…accompanied as always by stories about the music and the musicians who made it.
