When is ZZ Top Day? Good question!

According to a 1986 article in the Sun Sentinel, on August 27th, the Texas House of Representatives honored the band for their “contribution to the musical heritage of the state.” By unanimous vote, Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill, and Frank Beard were declared “official Texas heroes.” Which, if you think about it, would put them right up there alongside Sam Houston and Davy Crockett.

But according to the Texas Cultural Trust website, ZZ Top day took place on May 4th, 1991, when then Texas Governor Ann Richards recognized the trio for "bringing the powerful beat of Texas boogie to enthusiastic audiences across the globe."

Then in 1997, according to the Deseret News, acting Texas governor George W. Bush declared it ZZ Top Day on May 15th, saying, “These men helped put Texas on the map. They've traveled the country, but they never forgot Texas.”

They say “Everything’s bigger in Texas.” Apparently that includes the state holiday known as ZZ Top Day. Which at last count is actually three days.

. . . .

We're honoring this legendary band from Texas with our own ZZ Top Day celebration...Friday, May 17th at Martyrs'. It'll be an evening of great songs and great stories. Featuring Scott Tipping, Dan Ingenthron, Jim Barclay, and William Lindsey Cochran.
